YAXLEY PARISH COUNCIL HERITAGE OPEN DAY
46 PEOPLE and Ben the dog participated in the first Yaxley Heritage Walk led by Louise Dawson,
Huntingdonshire District Council’s Development Walker.Visitors were fascinated to learn about
Yaxley’s long-standing history and heritage, whilst enjoying a “Healthy Walk” to the “Cathedral
on the Fen” – St. Peter’s Church, the site of which has been a place of worship for over 1000 years.
Local Historians Margaret Long and Eric Day prepared local history displays and visitors reminisced
and enjoyed the memories of many past events. Rainbow Foodstores provided the very welcome
refreshments, which the WI and Flower Club members served to grateful visitors. At the Victorian
Cemetery Chapel on the corner of Dovecote Lane and Waterslade Road, Parish Councillors
Malcolm Whitney and Martin Rickman provided a unique look around the Chapel and Mortuary,
whilst visitors enjoyed listening to the memories of local Funeral Director Mick Claypole.
A local history display and artefacts were on display including the old fire engine, and
recent memorabilia donated by Mr Matthew Coles, retired Yaxley Fire Officer. For further
